Have Thine Own Way

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Thou art the potter, I am the clay.

Mold me and make me after thy will,

while I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Search me and try me, Master today!

Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,

as in thy presence humbly I bow.

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Wounded and weary, help me I pray!

Power, all power, surely is thine!

Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Hold o'er my being absolute sway.

Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see

Christ only, always, living in me!

Isaiah 64:8

But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

Operator

Here's a gospel song (sort of) that's just for fun

You gotta listen to it to appreciate it

(Dove Brothers)

Operator . . . give me . . . information.

Information . . . give me . . . long distance.

Long distance . . . give me . . . Hea. . . ven.

Operator, information,

Give me Jesus on the line.

Operator, information

I'd like to speak to a friend of mine.

Prayer is the number and faith is the exchange,

Heaven is the city, Jesus is the name.

Now operator, information,

Give me Jesus on the line.

Operator, information,

Tell me why it’s taking so long;

Operator, information,

Don't try to tell me what number to call.

My mother used this number when I was very small,

And every time she dialed it she always got a call;

Oh operator, information,

Please give me Jesus on the line.

Operator, information,

Please help me if you can.

Operator, information,

Please connect me with the Man.

Don't worry about the money, I will pay the charge,

Just give me a private line I'm calling from the heart.

Operator, information,

Give me Jesus on the line.

Psalm 116:1-2

I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

1

Jesus gave His life a ransom yonder on Calvary,

On Mount Calvary, cruel Calvary,

Paved the way by blood that we might win a bright shining crown;

Praise His (blessed) holy name,

salvation has been brought down. (O glory!)

Chorus:

Praise the Lord, (blessed Lord), salvation has been brought down (from heaven),

Go and shout (go and shout), and tell it the world around, (Go preach it and)

Tell it today (to people in sorrow),

Tell it today (and tell it tomorrow),

Preach the word of God that we might win a (shining) crown (in heaven);

Tell the lost (all the lost) salvation is full and free (to sinners),

Spread the news (blessed news) all over the land and sea, (Go teach it and)

Tell it afar (in every nation),

Tell it afar (all over creation),

Praise the Lord, (blessed Lord), salvation has been brought down!

2

All alone without a friend He suffered to pay it all,

Yes, He paid it all, Jesus paid it all;

In His blessed promises sweet victory can be found,

Praise His (blessed) holy name, salvation has been brought down. (O glory!)

[Chorus]

3

There's a blessed home prepared way over in gloryland,

In bright gloryland, blessed gloryland;

I have trusted in His love and now I am heaven bound;

Praise His (blessed) holy name, salvation has been brought down. (O glory!)

[Chorus]

Are You Ready?

There's a great day coming,

A great day coming,

There's a great day coming by and by,

When the saints and the sinners shall

be parted right and left,

Are you ready for that day to come?

There's a bright day coming,

A bright day coming,

There's a bright day coming by and by,

But its brightness shall only come

to them that love the Lord,

Are you ready for that day to come?

There's a sad day coming,

A sad day coming,

There's a sad day coming by and by,

When the sinner shall hear His doom,

"Depart, I know ye not!"

Are you ready for that day to come?

Refrain:

Are you ready? Are you ready?

Are you ready for the judgment day?

Are you ready? Are you ready?

for the judgment day?

Matthew 25

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Count Your Blessings

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev'ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings, money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.
Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

Whiter Than Snow

1

Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole,

I want Thee forever to live in my soul;

Break down every idol, cast out every foe;

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

REFRAIN:

Whiter than snow; yes, whiter than snow;

Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

2

Lord Jesus, let nothing unholy remain,

Apply Thine own blood and extract every stain;

To get this blest cleansing I all things forego;

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

3

Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies,

And help me to make a complete sacrifice;

I give up myself and whatever I know;

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

4

Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat;

I wait, blessed Lord, at Thy crucified feet;

By faith, for my cleansing I see Thy blood flow;

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

5

Lord Jesus, Thou see-est I patiently wait;

Come now, and within me a new heart create;

To those who have sought Thee Thou never saidst, No;

Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lyrics:James Nicholson 1828-1876

Psalm 51

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Isaiah 1:18

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

The Silver Star

The Church of Christ does not observe Christmas as a religious holiday because the only "holy day" authorized in the New Testament is the first day of the week (in my childhood often referred to as "the Lord's day"). The birth of Christ is part of  the New Testament narrative, so our church hymnals and songbooks did include songs usually associated with the traditional holiday, but we didn't usually sing them on or near the appropriate season. (However, we hardly ever sang them any other time, either.)

The original lyrics of this song have been somewhat edited in our Church of Christ songbooks, for specific points of doctrinal dissent. (*sigh*) I have noted those changes in the lyrics below.

On the brow of night there shines a silver star,
On the brow of night there shines a silver star,
And the wise men gaze on its heav’nly rays,
Till they find the King, whose throne they sought afar,
In the Babe of Bethlehem.
’Tis the lamp of God high hanging in the air,
’Tis the lamp of God high hanging in the air,
And it guides our feet thro’ the royal street;
There is sweet soul-rest for those who seek it there,
From the Babe of Bethlehem.
Bring your gifts of gold, of frankincense and myrrh,
Bring your gifts of gold, of frankincense and myrrh,
For the King we own is on David’s throne;
Let the holy Child* your best affections stir;
[*PRIEST AND KING]
’Tis the Babe of Bethlehem.

Refrain
Silver star, holy light,
Shine afar, o’er the night,
Till the world shall come where the young Child lay*,
[*FROM ITS SIN-STAINED WAY]
And enter the gates of the newborn day.

Matthew 2

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
