O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

I have more than 25 Christmas carols that I want to post here, so I'm starting today instead of waiting until December. (For my non-Catholic friends -- Advent starts this Sunday.)

Hymns for the Family of God page 148

1

O come, O come, Emmanuel

And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here,

Until the Son of God appear.

2

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer

Our spirits by thine advent here;

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,

And death's dark shadows put to flight.

3

O come, thou Wisdom from on high,

And order all things, far and night;

To us the path of knowledge show,

And cause us in her ways to go.

4

O come, Desire of nations, bind

In one the hearts of all mankind;

Bid thou our sad divisions cease,

And be thyself our Prince of Peace.

REFRAIN

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel!

O Come Emmanuel has its roots in Latin, likely from a sixth-century evening prayer book known as O Antiphons which consisted of seven separate texts, each beginning with the vocative particle “O” followed by an attribute of Jesus.  They were either sung or recited as part of an annual Christmas tradition, leading up to Christmas Eve.  These texts include:

O Sapientia (O Wisdom)

O Adonai (O Lord)

O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse)

O Clavis David (O Key of David)

O Oriens (O Dayspring)

O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations)

O Emmanuel (O God With Us)

This song is rife with scripture references, specifically Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah, and New Testament passages that reference Jesus as the fulfillment of those prophecies.
