If Jesus Goes With Me

It may be in the valley, where countless dangers hide;

It may be in the sunshine that I, in peace abide;

But this one thing I know - if it be dark or fair,

If Jesus is with me, I’ll go anywhere!

Refrain:

If Jesus goes with me, I’ll go - anywhere!

’Tis heaven to me, where’er I may be, if He is there!

I count it a privilege here his cross to bear;

If Jesus goes with me, I’ll go - anywhere!

It may be I must carry the blessed word of life

Across the burning deserts to those in sinful strife;

And though it be my lot to bear my colors there,

If Jesus goes with me, I’ll go anywhere! [Refrain]

But if it be my portion to bear my cross at home,

While others bear their burdens beyond the billow’s foam,

I’ll prove my faith in Him - confess His judgments fair,

And, if He stays with me, I’ll go anywhere! [Refrain]

It is not mine to question the judgments of my Lord,

It is but mine to follow the leadings of His word;

But if to go or stay, or whether here or there,

I’ll be, with my Savior, content, anywhere! [Refrain]

This video is not the best for hearing the lyrics for this song, because mostly what you can hear is the piano accompaniment. However -- WHAT AN ACCOMPANIMENT!!! The piano by itself is worth a listen.

(Note: The defining characteristic of the Church of Christ, in which I was raised, is that we do not have instrumental music in worship. We use our voices to sing, without any accompaniment -- which is doctrinally questionable and sadly divisive for the Christian community. But is great only in the sense that we all learned to sing four-part harmony. A cappella gospel songs are still my very favorite kind of music. But there is a lot of talent out there in the field of pianists and organists, too. This video features one of those talented musicians.)

P.S: There is another version of this song, apparently, which I never heard before I started looking for a video to go with this post. It's much more sedate and hymn-like (as opposed to 'gospel song' style). If you want to hear this version, YouTube has a good video of Jimmy Swaggart singing it.

I'd Rather Have Jesus

1

 I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold;

I'd rather be His than have riches untold;

I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands.

I'd rather be led by His nail pierced hand

Chorus:

Than to be the king of a vast domain

Or be held in sin's dread sway.

I'd rather have Jesus than anything

This world affords today.

I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause;

I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause;

I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame.

I'd rather be true to His holy name.

He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;

He's sweeter than honey from out the comb;

He's all that my hungering spirit needs.

I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead.

Matthew 19

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?

28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

I Want to Be a Worker

I want to be a worker for the Lord,

I want to love and trust his holy word,

I want to sing and pray, and be busy ev'ry day

In the vineyard of the Lord.

Chorus:

I will work, I will pray,

In the vineyard in the vineyard of the Lord,

I will work, I will pray, I will labor ev'ry day

In the vineyard of the Lord.

I want to be a worker ev'ry day,

I want to lead the erring in the way

That leads to heav'n above, where all is peace and love,

In the kingdom of the Lord.

I want to be a worker strong and brave,

I want to trust in Jesus' pow'r to save,

All who will truly come, shall find a happy home,

In the kingdom of the Lord.

I Shall Know Him

1

When my life work is ended, and I cross the swelling tide,

When the bright and glorious morning I shall see,

I shall know my Redeemer when I reach the other side,

And His smile will be the first to welcome me.

2

Oh, the soul thrilling rapture when I view His blessed face

And the luster of His kindly beaming eyes;

How my full heart will praise Him for the mercy, love, and grace

That prepared for me a mansion in the sky.

3

Oh, the dear ones in glory, how they beckon me to come,

And our parting at the river I recall;

To the sweet vales of Eden they will sing my welcome home,

But I long to meet my Saviour first of all.

4

Thro' the gates to the city in a robe of spotless white,

He will lead me where no tears will ever fall;

In the glad song of ages I shall mingle with delight,

But I long to meet my Saviour first of all.

CHORUS:

I shall know Him, I shall know Him

And redeemed by His side, I shall stand.

I shall know Him, I shall know Him,

By the print of the nails in His hand.

How Shall the Young Secure Their Hearts?

How shall the young secure their hearts,

And guard their lives from sin?

Thy word the choicest rules im-parts

To keep the conscience clean.

2

Tis like the sun, a heav’nly light,

That guides us all the day;

And, thru the dangers of the night,

A lamp to lead our way.

3

Thy Word is everlasting truth;

How pure is ev’ry page!

That holy book shall guide our youth,

And well support our age.

His Eye is on the Sparrow

 1

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain:

I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

2

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,

And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;

Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

3

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,

When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,

I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I love the words to this song. Not crazy about the music. It's really better suited for solo performance than congregational or group singing. Had trouble finding a video I liked. This is the best one I could come up with. Wintley Phipps.

Hilltops of Glory

Onward rejoicing I tread life’s way,

Higher I’m climbing each passing day;

Hilltops of Glory now rise in view,

where all shall be made new.

Way down in Egypt mid burning sand,

Moses has started for Canaan’s land;

Never turn backward always ascend

On to the journey’s end.

3

Footsteps of Jesus before us lead,

We tread life’s journey, His warnings heed;

Evil allurements cannot prevail,

I’m on the upward trail.

Chorus:

Hilltops of glory I now can see.

O brother won’t you come go with me?

Safe on the mountain I soon shall stand

Hilltops of glory land.

This song is fun to sing. Here's a video of the way we sing it in the Church of Christ.

He Keeps Me Singing

There's within my heart a melody;

Jesus whispers sweet and low,

"Fear not, I am with you, peace, be still,"

In all of life's ebb and flow.

All my life was wrecked by sin and strife,

Discord filled my heart with pain,

Jesus swept across the broken strings,

Stirred the slumbering chords again.

Though sometimes He leads through waters deep,

Trials fall across the way;

Though sometimes the path seems rough and steep,

See His footprints all the way.

Feasting on the riches of His grace,

Resting 'neath His sheltering wing,

Always looking on His smiling face,

That is why I shout and sing.

Soon He's coming back to welcome me

Far beyond the starry sky;

I shall wing my flight to worlds unknown,

I shall reign with Him on high.

Refrain:

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,

Sweetest name I know,

Fills my every longing,

Keeps me singing as I go.

Why Me, Lord?

1

Why me Lord?

What have I ever done

To deserve even one

Of the pleasures I've known?

Tell me Lord,

What did I ever do

That was worth loving you

Or the kindness you've shown?

2

Try me Lord,

If You think there's a way

I can try to repay

All I've taken from you

Maybe Lord,

I can show someone else

What I've been through myself

On my way back to you

CHORUS

Lord, help me Jesus, I've wasted it so

Help me Jesus, I know what I am;

Now that I know that I've needed you so

Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.

Songwriters: Kris Kristofferson

(The interesting thing about the lyrics of the chorus is the ambiguous placement of the word "so" -- Is it supposed to be "I've wasted it so" or "So help me, Jesus" ???  "I've needed you so" or "So help me, Jesus" ??? Or both... It seems to me that "so" is the pivotal word that bridges both phrases.)

O What a Savior!

 1

Once I was straying in sin's dark valley,

No hope within could I see,

He searched through Heaven, and found a Savior

To save a poor lost soul like me.

2

He left the Father with all His riches,

With calmness sweet and serene,

Came down from Heaven and gave His life-blood,

To make the vilest sinner clean.

3

Death's chilly waters I'll soon be crossing,

His hand will lead me safe o'er,

I'll join the chorus in that bright city,

And sing up there forever more.

REFRAIN

O what a Savior, O hallelujah!

His heart was broken on Calvary,

His hands were nail scarred,

His side was riven,

He gave His life-blood for even me.

Sleeping at the Foot of the Bed

Did you ever sleep at the foot of the bed when the weather was a whizzin' cold?

When the wind was a whistlin' around the house

And the moon was yellow as gold

You give your good warm mattress up to aunt Lizzy and uncle Fred

Too many kinfolks on a bad night so you went to the foot of the bed

I could always wait 'til the old folks et

And eat the leavings with grace

The teacher could keep me after school

I'd still have a smile on my face

I could wear the big boys worn out clothes

And let sister have my sled

But it always did get my nanny goat to sleep at the foot of the bed

It was fine enough when the kinfolks come

And the kids brought brand new games

You could see how fat all the old folks was

And learn all the babies' names

Had biscuits and custard and chicken pie, we all got Sunday fed

But I knowed darn well when night time come

I was heading for the foot of the bed

They say some folks don't know what it is

Having company all over the place

To wrestle for cover on a winter night

With a big foot sitting in your face

Or cold toenails a scratching your back

And the foot board scrubbing your head

I'll tell the world you ain't lost a thing

Never a sleepin' at the foot of the bed

I've done it over and over again in this land

Of the brave and the free

And in this all fired battle of life, it's left its mark on me

For I'm always a-struggling around at the foot instead of forging ahead

And I don't think it's caused from a doggone thing

But sleepin' at the foot of the bed

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

1

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,

Pilgrim through this barren land;

I am weak, but Thou art mighty,

Hold me with Thy powerful hand;

Bread of heaven,

Feed me till I want no more.

2

Open now the crystal fountain,

Whence the healing waters flow;

Let the fire and cloudy pillar

Lead me all my journey through;

Strong Deliverer,

Be Thou still my strength and shield.

3

When I tread the verge of Jordan,

Bid my anxious fears subside;

Bear me through the swelling current,

Land me safe on Canaan's side;

Songs of praises

I will ever give to Thee.

Author: William Williams (1717-1791)

This hymn was originally written in Welsh. William Williams was generally seen as Wales's premier hymnist. He is also rated among the great literary figures of Wales, as a writer of poetry and prose. He wrote more than 800 hymns.

The tune we learned in the Church of Christ (written by Thomas Hastings) is not the most commonly used tune for this hymn. The more commonly used tune, particularly in the British Isles, is Cwm Rhondda.

Here are links to two videos, one with each tune.

God of Our Fathers

1
God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor thru the skies,
Our grateful songs before thy throne arise.
2
Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast;
Be Thou our ruler, Guardian, Guide, and Stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.
3
From war's alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.
4
Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to neverending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine!

Each Step I Take

That time I decided to "illuminate" an old hymnal...

1

Each step I take, my Savior goes before me

And with His loving hand He leads the way

And with each breath I whisper, "I adore Thee"

Oh, what joy to walk with Him each day

2

At times I feel my faith begin to waver,

When up ahead I see a chasm wide.

It's then I turn and look up to my Savior.

I am strong when He is by my side.

3

I trust in God, no matter come what may

For life eternal is in His hand

He holds the key that opens up the way

That will lead me to the promised land

REFRAIN

Each step I take, I know that He will guide me

To higher ground, He ever leads me on

Until some day the last step will be taken

Each step I take, just leads me closer home

Thou My Everlasting Portion

Thou my everlasting portion,

More than friend or life to me;

All along my pilgrim journey,

Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Not for ease or worldly pleasure,

Nor for fame my pray'r shall be;

Gladly will I toil and suffer,

Only let me walk with Thee.

Lead me thru the vale of shadows,

Bear me o'er life's fitful sea:

Then the gate of life eternal,

May I enter, Lord, with Thee.

Art Thou Weary?

Art thou weary, heavy laden, Art thou sore distrest?

"Come to Me," saith One, "and, coming, Be at rest."

Hath He marks to lead me to Him, If He be my Guide?

"In His feet and hands are wound-prints, And His side."

Is there diadem, as Monarch, That His brow adorns?

"Yea, a crown, in very surety, But of thorns."

If I still hold closely to Him, What hath He at last?

"Sorrow vanquished, labor ended, Jordan passed."

If I ask Him to receive me, Will He say me nay?

"Not till earth and not till heaven Pass away."

6

 Finding, following, keeping, struggling, Is He sure to bless?

"Saints, apostles, prophets, martyrs, Answer, 'Yes.'"

Anywhere With Jesus

Anywhere with Jesus I can safely go;

Anywhere He leads me in this world below;

Anywhere without Him dearest joys would fade;

Anywhere with Jesus I am not afraid.

2

 Anywhere with Jesus I am not alone;

Other friends may fail me, He is still my own;

Though His hand may lead me over dreary ways,

Anywhere with Jesus is a house of praise.

Anywhere with Jesus, over land and sea,

Telling souls in darkness of salvation free;

Ready as He summons me to go or stay,

Anywhere with Jesus when He points the way.

4

Anywhere with Jesus I can go to sleep,

When the dark'ning shadows round about me creep;

Knowing I shall waken never more to roam,

Anywhere with Jesus will be home, sweet home.

Refrain:

Anywhere! anywhere!

Fear I cannot know;

Anywhere with Jesus I can safely go.

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

Savior, like a shepherd lead us,

Much we need Thy tender care;

In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,

For our use Thy folds prepare:

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,

Be the guardian of our way;

Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,

Seek us when we go astray:

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Hear, O hear us when we pray;

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Hear, O hear us when we pray.

Thou hast promised to receive us,

Poor and sinful though we be;

Thou hast mercy to relieve us,

Grace to cleanse, and pow'r to free:

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Early let us turn to Thee;

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Early let us turn to Thee.

4 Early let us seek Thy favor,

Early let us do Thy will;

Blessed Lord and only Savior,

With Thy love our bosoms fill:

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Thou hast loved us, love us still;

Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,

Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Savior, Lead Me Lest I Stray

Savior, lead me lest I stray,
Gently lead me all the way;
I am safe when by Thy side,
I would in Thy love abide.
Thou the refuge of my soul,
When life's stormy billows roll;
I am safe when Thou art nigh,
All my hopes on Thee rely.
Savior, lead me, then at last,
When the storm of life is past;
To the land of endless day,
Where all tears are wiped away.
Chorus:
Lead me, lead me,
Savior, lead me, lest I stray;
Gently down the stream of time,
Lead me, Savior, all the way.

Lead Me Gently Home

1
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home,
When life's toils are ended,
And parting days have come;
Sin no more shall tempt me;
Ne'er from Thee I'll roam,
If Thou'lt only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.
2
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life's darkest hours, Father,
When life's troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand'ring,
Lest from Thee I roam;
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
REFRAIN
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Will L. Thompson

This song is one of many that feature a bass lead in the chorus. When I was growing up, we had a man in our congregation who had the deepest bass voice of anyone I've ever heard, before or since. His name was Chet Linville. I swear, in my memory he was singing an octave lower than the other men. I guess in reality that wasn't so, but the timbre of his voice would just make you feel the rumble.

Where He Leads I'll Follow

Sweet are the promises,
Kind is the word,
Dearer far than any message man ever heard;
Pure was the mind of Christ,
Sinless I see;
He the great example is, and pattern for me.
2
 Sweet is the tender love
Jesus hath shown,
Sweeter far than any love that mortals have known;
Kind to the erring one,
Faithful is He;
He the great example is, and pattern for me.
List' to His loving words,
“Come unto Me;”
Weary, heavy-laden, there is sweet rest for thee;
Trust in His promises,
Faithful and sure;
Lean upon the Savior, and thy soul is secure. (Chorus)
Chorus:
Where He leads I’ll follow,
Follow all the way.
Where He leads I’ll follow,
Follow Jesus ev’ry day.

Lord, Lead Me On

1

When the way seems dark and long,

As I pass amid the throng,

Hold to my hand,

Dear Lord, I pray.

Give me grace to shout and shine,

Ever in the light divine,

Lord, Lead me on,

From day to day.

2

In this world of doubt and gloom,

When hope's flowers fail to bloom,

Hold to my hand,

Dear Lord, I pray;

I have put my faith in Thee,

Till the homeland I shall see,

Lord, lead me on,

From day to day.

3

When old age is stealing on,

And my strength is almost gone,

Hold to my hand,

Dear Lord, I pray;

Surely Thou wilt ne'er forsake,

Till in heaven I awake,

Lord, lead me on,

From day to day.

CHORUS

Lord, lead me on from day to day,

I want to walk the holy way;

Tho' friends forsake me all alone,

I ask Thee, Lord, to lead me on.

Lyrics: Marion W. Easterling

This is a song we learned from the Chuck Wagon Gang songbooks that we bought one summer at a local Chuck Wagon Gang performance in Hartford, Michigan, when I was a teenager. The family of one of my schoolmates had purchased a farm a few miles out of town and turned it into a venue for country and gospel music performances -- Melody Ranch. Our family sang a lot of songs out of those paperback songbooks. This was one of our favorites.

Here is a link to a video of the Gaither Homecoming crew singing it the way we used to.

Note: The Nelon family - the mother, father, and daughter - died in a plane crash in July of 2024, on their way to a Gaither Alaska cruise.

All the Way My Savior Leads Me

1

All the way my Savior leads me; What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who thro' life has been my Guide?

Heav'nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell!

For I know, whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well;

For I know, whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

2

All the way my Savior leads me, Cheers each winding path I tread,

Gives me grace for ev'ry trial, Feeds me with the living bread;

Tho' my weary steps may falter, And my soul athirst may be,

Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see;

Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see.

3

All the way my Savior leads me; O the fullness of His love!

Perfect rest to me is promised In my Father's house above;

When my spirit, clothed immortal, Wings its flight to realms of day,

This my song thro' endless ages: Jesus led me all the way!

This my song thro' endless ages: Jesus led me all the way!

Lead, Kindly Light

1
Lead, kindly Light, amid th' encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on;
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on.
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene -- one step enough for me.
2
I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on.
I loved the garish day, and spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: Remember not past years.
3
So long Thy pow'r has blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone.
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.

J. H. Newman
